Digital Independent Learning (DIL)
An online self-paced training course using gamification to help associates learn about Workday and become proficient at using it.
Business Problem
Walmart recently transitioned to Workday as the main platform for the majority of HR transactions. With the impact of COVID19 this year, the business noticed that excessive time spent training was impacting operations. Walmart Academies were temporarily closed and traditional formal training ceased. Workday was slated to go live in June and its training content/resources needed to be readily accessible for associates.
Discovery
In collaboration with our Workday partners, we discovered that:
Current training for Workday was long, rigorous, and an information overload for the duration of 8 hours.
Associates still required additional training even after the initial training.
Associates did not know where to access Workday resources.
Associates were confused by which transaction responsibility would be handled by them.
Workday content needed to be available through bring your own devices (BYOD).
Mockup v1
Solution
Condense, digitize, and gamify Workday training content to a self-paced online course that associates can access from their BYOD device.
Approach
My role: Web designer
Platform used: Adobe Experience Manager (AEM)
Timeline: 8 weeks
First, we established the different associates using the platform and consolidated them into 4 main users — individual contributor, manager of people, people partner, and a workday champion. Then, we reviewed the content and determined what topics would fit for each user to make them proficient in Workday. This formed the basis of our sitemap.
Using the Monopoly board game as our inspiration, we quickly created a prototype in Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) for our Workday partners to approve the look and feel as well as the user's journey. To generate engagement, we gamified our training content to include interactive activities, rest and skill up section, videos, GIFs and more.
User Testing
We were able to conduct 12 user testing on 4 modules built for the training website.
From the user testing, we learned that associates liked:
The generated character path.
Audio option.
Game elements.
Knowledge check questions.
Shortened content.
However, we quickly found out that:
Certain AEM components were not responsive in the BYOD view.
Associates failed to access the additional resources page.
Some associates had navigational issues.
Associates had trouble logging into our site using different browsers.
Associates wanted a way to track their progress.
After a couple of user testing sessions, we implemented new components into the site to replace components that were causing users to fail at navigating to the resource page. This proved to be effective since all users after this was able to pass this part. Additionally, we created two documents that associates will be able to download to help them. The ‘Helpful hint’ document aims to help associates navigate through the site. The ‘Learning Path checklist’ document aims to help associates keep track of their progress throughout the game.
Outcome
We wanted our users to feel that this content was curated for them (specific to their role) and that they could learn at their own pace. We were pleased to hear that the launch was successful and associates appreciated the online course we created.

“They said that they took the people lead training and really liked it better than the training that they went through back when the salaried population was going live. Felt like it was in smaller chunks to help them digest the information and they could reference back to things that they saw during the training. Really great job to you and the team.” - Workday Partners
